Why John Lennon Still Matters Today

 

December 1 of 1971, John Lennon along with his wife Yoko Ono introduced to the world one of the great Christmas songs of history ever, ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’. 

Over the past five decades ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ has become a staple Christmas song recognized and played all over the world during the Holidays. 

Originally released in the US on December 1st 1971, it didn’t top the charts as number 1. A year later it was released in 1972 charting at number 4. The song did surge on the charts after John Lennon’s tragic death in 1981. 

The song originated from John and Yoko’s billboard campaign ‘War is Over’ released in 1969. As John put it, “its political message across with a little honey”.  ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ form of protest of America’s inclusion in the Vietnam War.
